Stump Grinding Launceston
Below-ground stump removal across Launceston, with machines sized for the narrow side-gate access common in older suburbs and the larger stumps left by mature oaks and elms.
A stump left after a removal becomes a slow-moving problem. The wood retains moisture, draws fungal pathogens and creates harbourage for termites. The surface roots die unevenly, pushing up paving and brickwork as they contract. Suckers shoot from the root plate and have to be cut back every year. Getting the stump out in a single visit eliminates all of that. Around Launceston we bring two machines depending on access — a narrow walk-behind unit for the tight yards in Invermay, West Launceston and South Launceston, and a larger tracked unit for the heavy stumps left by the big deciduous trees on older blocks.
Pricing turns on three things: the diameter of the stump at ground level, the species (dense hardwood oak and blackwood take longer than softwood pine), and how far below the surface you need it taken. Most people want 200 to 300mm under, which is enough for fresh turf, paving bedding sand or a shallow garden bed. If you're laying a concrete slab, building a deck or putting in a new tree in the same location, we grind deeper — typically 400 to 500mm, sometimes more depending on what we find in the root structure.
After grinding you're left with a mix of fine wood fibre, soil and root material in the void. That fill subsides over time as the organic matter breaks down — so for anything structural, pull it out and replace with topsoil. For a garden bed you can mix in compost and let it sit a season before planting. We can include topsoil backfill as a line item on the day if you want it done in one visit.

Stump Grinding FAQs
How deep will the machine go?
Standard is 200 to 300mm below the surface — enough for lawn, garden beds or paving sand. For a footing, a slab or planting another tree in the same spot we grind to 400 to 500mm or deeper. Tell us what's going in and we'll set the depth accordingly.
Will the machine fit through an older Launceston side gate?
If the opening is 900mm clear or wider, yes. That covers most of the Federation and interwar housing in West Launceston, South Launceston, Invermay and Kings Meadows. For anything narrower we walk it on the quote and work out whether to crane the machine in or use a different approach.
What's left in the hole after grinding?
A loose blend of wood fibre, disturbed soil and root material, roughly level with the surrounding ground. That mix drops as the organics decompose, so for lawn or paving we recommend pulling it out and replacing with screened topsoil. For a garden bed, mix in some compost and let the area settle through a season before planting anything that matters.
Can you grind several stumps in one visit?
Yes, and the per-unit cost is lower because mobilisation only happens once. Worth doing all at once if you've accumulated stumps from previous removals across the yard. Send through a count and rough diameters and we'll quote the whole lot together.
